The rug is laid flat on the ground, then fresh water is poured over it. The rug washers then use a wood plank, sharpened on one edge, to force the water through the rug pile. This removes impurities picked up during the creation process.

Almost all the Hamadan rugs are woven on a cotton foundation using hardy wool from the sheep used to a cooler mountainous climate for the pile. Typically the rugs have a geometrical design often with a single central medallion. The rugs are of good quality are generally long lasting.
